Law enforcement in Sacramento are probing a shooting that broke out late Saturday at Howe Park in Sacramento just as officers were dissolving an unlawful assembly of multiple hundreds of people.
How It Started
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first dispatched to the park at approximately 6:30 PM on April 18 after learning of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Following that, a second caller reported mentioning an alleged brawl happening within the park grounds.
An overhead unit was sent to survey the area but came back with no confirmation of a fight. However, authorities discovered that a crowd of several hundred had packed into the park in an unauthorized manner.
The Shooting Itself
Law enforcement personnel began the process of clearing the park by forming a perimeter and broadcasting over loudspeakers commanding the crowd to disperse at once. About 15 minutes were given for individuals to vacate.
It was during this dispersal that 20 to 25 gunshots echoed through the night. The sudden gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Officers quickly moved to searching for victims.

By the time the scene was secured, four gunshot victims were located with gunshot injuries. The shooting victims — comprising three men and one woman ranging in age through their in their twenties — were rushed to local Sacramento hospitals. Hospital staff noted that two had critical injury classifications, one had moderate injuries, and one suffered minor injuries. According to authorities, all four were in stable condition.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District assisted at the location and aided in treating those with gunshot wounds at the scene.
Evidence at the Scene
The bulk of the shooting appears to have happened adjacent to the Cottage Way corridor close to the Home Depot store located at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Investigators identified additional shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Ballistic damage were identified in the wrought iron fence surrounding the Home Depot. These discoveries indicated that a shooter had been sending rounds south Howe Community Park shooting 2026 from Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot building and parking lot. The nearby Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown as a precaution. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives worked tirelessly through the early morning hours.
